After months of worrying, wondering, and waiting it’s here! ’The Peace Corps invites you to serve’ was the folder that came in the mail. In November I received a nomination to serve in Sub-Sahara Africa to teach high school math or science. After heartily accepting, I have waited months to hear back from the Peace Corps office. Since then, I have been asked countless times “Where are you going to be? What are you going to do?”. Well the time has come when I can finally tell you all! I will be teaching high school biology in Mozambique. The next adventure of my life begins in September on the 25th when I leave home to embark with the fearless group that will serve with me on my journey.
As a background of my life to come I will be teaching 10th and 12 grade students in a class size of 40-100 students. Amount of textbooks: unknown. Amount of desks: unknown. Internet: likely. Chalkboard: definitely. Language:Portuguese. This is going to be a completely new language for me, which I am very excited to learn.
Here is a little background on the Peace Corps and Mozambique:
In 1961, President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps to promote world peace and friendship.
The Peace Corps' mission has three simple goals:
- Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
- Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
- Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.
Note: I got this information from the Peace Corps website. To learn more go to peacecorps.gov.
As for Mozambique, it is an African country that gained their independence in 1975 from Portugal.
In 1976 a 20 year civil war broke out across the country, but 16 years later here we are. Currently Mozambique has a democratic nation with peaceful elections, skyrocketing economic growth rates, and considerable advances in technology. Even with all this, it is still one of the poorest countries in the world.
